Wow, I can’t believe it’s been a few weeks since I last left a note! I guess with all this lovely warm weather we’ve had lately in the Indy City, I’ve found myself outdoors quite a bit cleaning up the landscape beds rather than cleaning the inside beds.
But I wanted to share a little re-use project that I recently completed. On my home Sunday, I came across a wonderful decorative clay pot out in someone’s trash pile. Yes, I will admit - I’m a “dumpster diver”. Literally, one man’s trash was my new found treasure. This pot would’ve retailed for $30-$40 new and I could definitely put it to good use! I also had my box from ordering my steam cleaner that came with those little styrofoam peanuts. Since you’re not supposed to throw those things in the trash, and sometimes it’s hard to find a recycling center that will take them, here’s a wonderful re-use for them.
I filled my new pot about half-way with the peanuts before adding soil and these happy pansies. The flowers definitely don’t need as much soil as would fill the entire pot. Adding the peanuts makes the pot less heavy (& easier to lift to move around) and also helps with drainage. In one of my past lives working at an orchid greenhouse, we actually put these little guys in the bottom of all of our plant pots.
The finished product? Well, here it is!
Other than the flowers and soil, this project was completely re-used (one of my favorite of the 3 R’s). So next time you see me next to someone’s trash pile with my trunk open, you might get another wonderful re-use idea :)
Happy Monday Green Gals & Gents! And don’t forget to protect your plants tonight….this warm spell is making way for a freeze advisory tonight!
